TRAGAST July Bulletin (Jul. 04, 2024)

Coordinator's Corner

Welcome to the new Rotary Year! You may know that Rotary International has decreed that Rotary Year 2024-2025 will be the year with a Presidential Theme. I'm glad that Rotary International President Stephanie Urchik chose the magic of rotary, because what we intend to do is truly magic: End Child Human Trafficking!

TRAGAST ended Rotary Year 2023-2024 with an awareness event featuring the screening of the film Sound of Freedom which was great (3rd time I've seen it, but not the last. It's that good)! The real highlight of our last Sunday in June was a stirring speech by Rotary District Governor 2024-2025, Apisak Jompong. Thank You Governor!

We intend to have several human trafficking awareness events this Rotary year, most will feature The Sound of Freedom.

The TRAGAST Vision is a Thailand Region Free of Human Trafficking with a focus on training to prevent child human trafficking. To do this we must have collaboration between government agencies, NGO's, Rotarian's and other private citizens.

Happy American Independence Day!

The Last Workshop

The one-day workshop ‘Stop Grooming and Keeping Children Safe’ was conducted at the Peace Culture Foundation on Sunday 30 June 2024 with 25 participants. A few flew down from Bangkok and some travelled from nearby provinces like Lamphun, Lampang, Chiang Rai. Most are parents, teachers, child caregivers from shelter homes. Among them are four Catholic sisters. They learned about the prevalence of the problem, the severity of the consequences on children’s lives and their families, and how to detect signs of grooming behavior patterns. Participants left with a strong commitment to spread the knowledge and apply what they learn in their work and their families.

Above is Dr. Sombat Tapanya’s report on his last workshop for Rotary Year 2023-2024. There are a couple of comments that I would like to make. Support for these types of events is exactly why TRAGAST exists. A special thank you to Khun Ohm and others who work tirelessly without pay or even recognition to make these workshops possible. Please help us change the title of this article to read

30 June Awareness Event

In conjunction with the Rotary Club of Chiang Mai Airport, TRAGAST hosted our third awareness event featuring the movie The Sound of Freedom on Sunday 30 June. The location was Tulou Chiang Mai. They did an amazing job!

There was some uncertainty about the wisdom of repeating the event in Chiang Mai. Well gentle reader, all doubts have been quelled! This was the best event thus far! 31 people attended the screening and 31 people attended the dinner. Our guest speaker, District Governor Apisak Jompong did a sterling job and clearly demonstrated that District 3360 is on board in the fight against human trafficking!

My only concern: Will we be able to make future events even better? Please read “Future Events” and “TRAGAST Sponsorship Opportunities”
