TRAGAST BULLETIN
January 2025
Change Coordinator's Corner
2024 is gone!  What have we accomplished?  My answer is two fold. First take a look at the article 2024 in Review, you will see that much has been accomplished. Second, we could have done more if we had more resources, both people and finances.

Next year, Peace Culture Foundation plans to expand our knowledge and efforts in prevention work even further. This includes organizing training sessions for diverse participant groups, collecting survey data, and developing training curricula that students can use to disseminate information in their own communities. We also aim to address the issue of “abusers-to-be,” focusing on young individuals who exhibit risky sexual behaviors. Our goal is to prevent sexual violence from both the perpetrator’s and victim’s perspectives. Currently, we are in the process of research literature review, gathering information, and consulting with experts to design an effective training program.

We start the new year in the midst of a fundraising campaigns where you have the opportunity to support the Peace Culture Foundation and their great work training children, their teachers and their families.   Please make your donations and order your shirts by 15 January.

Perhaps the easiest and most efficient way you can help is by passing this bulletin along to your kind and compassionate friends.

Donate Today - Help Train 500 Children - Receive Your Shirts Soon
Why?   Great question, here’s an answer:  Peace Culture Foundation (PCF) is providing Grooming (and human trafficking) prevention training to middle and high school students.   The purpose of this campaign is to fund the training of at least 500 children.  We calculate the average cost is only ฿200 per child in groups of 80 or more.  Bottom line our goal is to raise a minimum of ฿100,000 THB ($2,900 USD).  If we raise more, we’ll train more children?

How?  You are asked to buy shirts and pass this information on to your caring friends and family.

This campaign begins 1 December 2024 and ends 15 January 2025.

TRAGAST will collect the shipping information and donations.  There are two easy ways to proceed:
  • Click here and fill out your order.
  • Send an email to treasurer@tragast.org
After your order is placed you will receive an email with payment instructions.

At the end of the campaign all donations will be transferred to PCF.

PCF is handling fulfillment.  The shirts will be shipped around 1 February.

TRAGAST will report the campaign results in our 1 February bulletin.

This year, PCF conducted both online and on-site training sessions, attracting a diverse group of participants, including students, parents, caregivers, and professionals involved in child protection. We were fortunate to receive support from various public and private sectors, which enabled us to reach a wide audience. Additionally, we had the opportunity to disseminate knowledge on preventing grooming and sexual abuse of children and youth beyond the Chiang Mai province. This marks significant progress in our ongoing preventive efforts.

TRAGAST Meets Artificial Intelligence
TRAGAST Meets Artificial Intelligence.
In November I attended a workshop on “The use of generative Artificial Intelligence to facilitate trafficking in persons”.   When you think about it, of course criminal use of generative AI makes perfect sense.  The evil uses are many including automated tasks to find social medial accounts and automatically engage prospective victims in recruitment conversations.   The workshop highlighted proactive measures and interventions.  The first line being AI Governance.  Gentle reader, I encourage you to learn more at The Bali Process and Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.   Do we now determine that AI is evil?   I think not, it’s a powerful tool in the hands of both good and evil people.

TRAGAST intends to use AI to generate recommendations for our future strategic plan and actions.  Of course, we will continue to facilitate training to protect children from human trafficking and we will continue to host awareness events.  What else will we realize because of Artificial Intelligence?
The rest of this article was generated by the Artificial Intelligence tool known as ChatGPT.

Artificial Intelligence: A Powerful Ally in the Fight Against Human Trafficking
Human trafficking, a global crisis affecting millions, remains one of the most heinous violations of human rights. It preys on the vulnerable, transcending borders, economies, and cultures. With an estimated 27.6 million people trapped in forced labor or sexual exploitation, innovative approaches are crucial—and artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool.

The Role of AI
AI uses machine learning, natural language processing, and data analytics to analyze vast datasets and identify patterns beyond human capacity. In combating human trafficking, AI can:
  1. Enhance Victim Identification.
  2. Disrupt Trafficking Networks.
  3. Support Law Enforcement.
  4. Aid Victim Recovery.
AI in the Prevention of Child Human Trafficking
Children are among the most vulnerable to human trafficking, and AI can play a critical role in prevention efforts:
  1. Predictive Analytics for Vulnerability Assessment: AI can analyze risk factors like poverty levels, school drop-out rates, and familial instability to identify communities or individuals at higher risk of trafficking. Early intervention programs can then be directed to these areas.
  2. Online Safety Monitoring: Machine learning models can scan social media and online platforms to detect grooming behaviors or suspicious interactions targeting children. Algorithms can flag predatory language or activities for further investigation.
  3. Facial Recognition and Missing Children Identification: AI tools like facial recognition can match photos of missing children with images circulating on illicit websites or public platforms, aiding in their swift recovery.
  4. Educational Chatbots: AI-driven chatbots can educate children, parents, and educators on the signs of trafficking and how to stay safe online. These tools can provide accessible information and resources in multiple languages.
  5. Disrupting Recruitment Networks: AI can monitor and identify patterns in digital recruitment tactics used by traffickers to target children. By dismantling these networks early, potential trafficking cases can be prevented.
Real-World Applications
  • Thorn’s Spotlight Tool: Reduces investigation times by analyzing online ads to identify potential trafficking victims.
  • Marinus Analytics: Uses AI tools like Traffic Jam to analyze escort websites and locate missing persons.
  • Financial Data Analysis: AI helps financial institutions identify suspicious transactions linked to trafficking operations.
Challenges and Ethical Considerations
Despite its potential, AI faces challenges:
  • Data Privacy: Ensuring ethical use and legal compliance when collecting and analyzing sensitive data.
  • Algorithm Bias: Addressing biases in datasets to prevent overlooking marginalized groups.
  • Traffickers’ Adaptation: Keeping pace with traffickers as they evolve their methods to evade detection.
  • Resource Gaps: Overcoming technological and funding limitations in high-risk, low-resource areas.
The Path Forward
Collaboration among governments, tech companies, NGOs, and law enforcement is key to maximizing AI’s impact. Investments in research and capacity-building are essential, especially in underserved regions. Public awareness campaigns can also foster trust and encourage community participation in anti-trafficking efforts.

Conclusion
While not a standalone solution, AI is a game-changing ally in the fight against human trafficking. By leveraging its capabilities responsibly, we can identify victims, disrupt networks, and support survivors, offering hope to millions of vulnerable individuals worldwide.
Activities & Initiatives
Several days ago, I read a communication from one of our RAGAS board members, PDG Aswini Kar. The timing was perfect since we are halfway through this Rotary Year and It’s time to redo the TRAGAST strategic plan.  As we consider our near and mid-range future, some of my questions include:
What activities should we increase?
Which ones should we decrease or eliminate?
What is the best way for our unique organization to secure the funding we need?
How much do we need, really?

The email (copied below) gives me much food for thought, perhaps it will be useful in your process as well?

Dear Board Members,

Rotary Clubs, with their global network and community focus, can play a significant role in the fight against human trafficking and modern slavery. Here are several activities and initiatives that Rotary Clubs can undertake to contribute to this cause. Board Members are requested to go through and offer their valuable suggestions.
1. Awareness and Education
- Raise Awareness: Educate communities, schools, and workplaces about the signs of trafficking and modern slavery. Awareness can lead to better identification and prevention.
- Training Programs: Implement training programs for law enforcement, healthcare providers, and other professionals to recognize and respond to trafficking.

2. Policy and Advocacy**
-Support Stronger Laws: Advocate for stronger laws and better enforcement against trafficking. Support policies that protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
- Lobby for Resources: Push for increased funding for anti-trafficking programs and services for survivors.

3. Support and Empowerment
-Victim Support: Provide comprehensive support services for survivors, including legal aid, counselling, job training, and housing.
-Community Empowerment: Work with vulnerable communities to provide education, economic opportunities, and support networks that reduce their risk of exploitation.

4. Collaboration and Partnerships
- Work with NGOs: Partner with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are dedicated to fighting human trafficking. Support their efforts through donations, volunteering, and advocacy.
- Build Coalitions: Collaborate with other organizations, governments, and businesses to create a unified approach to combating trafficking.

5. Economic and Social Development
- Address Root Causes: Focus on addressing the root causes of trafficking, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of education. Economic development programs can help reduce vulnerabilities.
- Support Ethical Practices: Promote and support businesses that adhere to ethical labour practices and work to eliminate forced labour from their supply chains.

6.Share Information: Encourage sharing of information and best practices between organizations and governments to improve collective efforts.

7. Technology and Innovation
- Leverage Technology: Use technology to track trafficking networks, enhance victim identification, and raise awareness. Innovations like apps and online platforms can play a role in prevention and intervention.
- Promote Digital Literacy: Educate individuals, especially vulnerable populations, about online safety and the risks of exploitation.

8. Personal Actions
- Stay Informed: Educate yourself about trafficking and modern slavery. Understanding the issue is the first step to taking effective action.
- Support Ethical Brands: Choose to buy products from companies that ensure their supply chains are free from forced labor.

By combining these approaches and working together, we can make significant strides toward eradicating human trafficking and modern slavery. It's a global challenge that requires local action,

What activities and initiatives will you take as we move forward in our fight against human trafficking / modern slavery?
